A crisp, crunchy, aromatic honey-sweetened homemade granola with apple chips, raisins and delicious munchy seeds. A delicious breakfast treat!
When planning festive meals, we always seem to overlook breakfast! I’ve done my best to fill this gap before, for instance with these special Chanukah waffles. But as I was rustling up a batch of homemade granola recently, my thoughts turned to the upcoming Jewish new year – Rosh Hashanah.
Why granola?
I have my daughter Kipper to thank for my recent conversion to the ways of the granola-cruncher. A while ago she stayed at a friend’s house and for breakfast had yogurt with fruit and granola. Naturally, this was the “best breakfast ever” and I had to rush out and obtain the necessary ingredients. Her fondness for crunchy oaty cereal and creamy tangy yogurt was predictably short-lived, alas. So of course muggins here had to step up to prevent the granola from going to waste.
I’m glad I did! I’m not usually a big fan of breakfast cereal but a bowl of thick natural yogurt topped with crunchy, spicy, not-too-sweet homemade granola has won me over! If I’m feeling indulgent then some sliced fruits or a drizzle of honey can make this into a special morning treat. Otherwise it’s just a nutritious, tasty, low-effort way to start my day.
Homemade granola
If you usually buy your granola – stop now! It’s really no substitute for the real thing!
Homemade granola is SO EASY, and you can customise it exactly how you like it. I prefer mine to be a little less sweet, a little bit spicy, and with a good dose of crunchy seeds. You can also add dried fruits of your choice, nuts, coconut flakes, or even chocolate chips.
And your homemade granola will also be way more economical than ready-made. Prepare to save money!
Rosh Hashanah breakfast
Breakfast is often overlooked when planning YomTov meals. But no longer!
This delicious homemade granola is sweetened with natural honey and includes crunchy apple chips and sweet raisins for a new year treat. Just the thing to fuel you through a hard morning’s praying!
What kind of oats?
Not all oats are created equal. To make really crunchy and delicious homemade granola you need rolled oats or chunky oats, and not porridge oats or quick-cook oats.
We usually have both in the house because DH has porridge for breakfast almost every day, but I prefer to use big, chunky, rolled oats for making flapjacks or throwing into a crumble topping.
Yogurt or milk?
I prefer to have my homemade granola with yogurt, rather than with milk. A thick, creamy dollop of yogurt will coat the crunchy chunks of granola without making them go soggy. Plus, I love the combination of slightly sour yogurt and slightly sweet and spicy granola. Yum.
Festive breakfast
I hope you’ll try this delicious homemade granola with honey and apple. It’s so easy to make, and will certainly help to ensure a sweet and delicious new year!

📖 Recipe
Homemade granola with apple and honey
Ingredients
- 150 g rolled oats
- 50 g mixed seeds – I used sunflower, pumpkin, sesame and linseed
- ½ teaspoon mixed spice (or your favourite sweet spice blend)
- ½ teaspoon ground ginger
- 60 ml vegetable oil
- 60 ml honey
- 30 g packet of apple crisps
- 30 g raisins or sultanas
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 150°C (300°F). Line a baking sheet with parchment or a non-stick liner.
- Mix the oats, seeds, mixed spice and ginger in a large bowl. Add the oil and honey and stir everything together very thoroughly to coat.
- Spread the oat mixture into a thin layer (approx. 6mm/¼ inch). Bake in the preheated oven for 10 minutes. Remove from the oven, stir, and spread out again. Bake for a further 10 minutes.
- Remove from the oven and stir again. Press the oat mixture down firmly and return to the oven for a final 5 minutes.
- Remove the baking tray from the oven and leave the oaty mixture to cool without touching it! It will clump and stick together as it cools. Once the granola is completely cold, break up into pieces and mix in the apple crisps and raisins/sultanas.
- Transfer your homemade granola to an air-tight container for storage. Enjoy!
