I bought this cute milk bottle for serving shakes and smoothies while I was on holiday in America, so when I made this delicious banana mocha shake, I poured it into the bottle to serve. I photographed it, drank the shake (yum!), washed the bottle, and promptly dropped it on the floor and smashed it. Nnnngh. Next time it’ll just come in a glass 🙁
I must admit, I cursed and expleted and was generally unladylike in my response. Fortunately, I’d just drunk my delicious banana mocha smoothie shake though, and was feeling sufficiently uplifted to shrug off the accident as just-one-of-those-things. At least it happened AFTER I’d taken the pictures. Phew.
I have been making versions of this pick-me-up shake for years and years, and it’s based on a drink I used to get in a vegan cafe in Manchester about 15 years ago. I think I must have first ordered it for a dare, because the three main ingredients – banana, chocolate & black coffee – really don’t sound to me like they’re going to work together. But they do! Oh boy they do…
I’m not much of a coffee person, but sometimes you need that jolt of caffeine to get you through the next few hours, and this is my preferred way to get it. The shake is sweet, fruity, chocolatey, smooth and rich, with just a hint of after-burn from the chilli. Mmmm. This version of the recipe is vegan, but I’ve made it with cow’s milk before and it works just fine. You can add a dollop of nut butter, a drop of vanilla, different spices… just as long as you have the banana, cocoa & coffee, all will be well. It’s good for breakfast, elevenses, as a reviving tonic around lunchtime or a caffeinated treat mid-afternoon. You can’t go wrong, really.
Unless, like me, you have a low tolerance for caffeine. In that case, don’t drink it after about 4pm. Oh, and don’t serve it to children! Unless you use decaf coffee of course.
This makes a single, smallish serving – just enough to pick you up. Scale up if you’re feeling really in need of a boost.

- 1 ripe banana
- 2 tbsp espresso or strong black coffee
- 0.5 tbsp cocoa powder
- 0.5 tbsp honey
- pinch chilli powder (optional)
- pinch salt
- 150ml almond milk (or milk or milk substitute of your choice)
- Place all the ingredients into the blender and process until smooth. Pour into a glass and serve!
