Hello! I’m Helen, and I’m the Jewish Mum behind Family Friends Food.
Family Friends Food was started in 2014 as a place to share my growing collection of family-friendly recipes online. Today, it’s a space dedicated to modern British Jewish lifestyle, filled with kosher, meat-free, delicious recipes for people who want foodie inspiration with a Jewish twist.
Fresh, tasty, nutritious food
My recipes draw on Jewish traditions and seasonal ingredients to create innovative and delicious dishes. I take inspiration from British, European and Middle Eastern food heritage. Being a mum has refocused my attention on preparing healthy, nutritious food that everyone enjoys eating.
Fun times!
When I’m not busy blogging, I love playing and listening to music, reading, and hanging out with my family and friends. Most people are surprised to learn that I live in the beautiful and historic city of Cambridge!
I’m so glad you stopped by Family Friends Food, and hope you’ll continue to come back and discover more of what’s here. If you’d like to get my recipes straight to your inbox you can subscribe for emails.
Take care and all the best, Helen x.
What’s with the pomegranate?
I chose a pomegranate for the logo of family-friends-food, as it’s a very symbolic and significant fruit in Jewish tradition.
According to legend, every pomegranate contains exactly 613 seeds – the same number as the amount of mitzvot (commandments) in the Torah. In addition, the calyx at the end of a pomegranate is shaped like the 6-pointed star of David (Magen David).
The pomegranate is one of the Seven Species of fruits and grains which the Torah names as special products of the land of Israel. It is also written that the robe of the High Priest in the Holy Temple in Jerusalem had pomegranates embroidered on it. And the silver finials used to decorate the Sefer Torah (scrolls of the law) in the synagogue are called ‘rimonim‘ in Hebrew – meaning pomegranates.
All that, and it’s a beautiful and delicious fruit!
