A definitive resource for vegetarian and vegan Rosh Hashanah recipes. Over 80 hand chosen sweet & savoury dishes, all featuring traditional ingredients. Shana Tova!
Rosh Hashanah is almost here, so to help you plan, I’ve put together a list of delicious vegetarian and vegan Rosh Hashanah recipes using traditional festive ingredients – sometimes called simanim – gathered from some of my favourite food bloggers.
Traditional Rosh Hashanah foods
There are numerous traditional and symbolic foods eaten on Rosh Hashanah. They include:
- apples
- honey
- dates
- pomegranates
- carrots
- courgettes/pumpkin/squash
- beetroots
These are the most common but there are many more such as black eyed peas and fenugreek! They are said to represent our wishes for the year ahead, such as sweetness for a sweet year. Sometimes the names of these foods in Hebrew or Yiddish sounds similar to another word, which is something we hope for – such as prosperity, or the defeat of our enemies.
Delicious Rosh Hashanah recipes
The recipes below cover both sweet and savoury dishes, and all highlight one or more of these delicious ingredients (some recipes appear in more than one section). I’m sure you can put together a full menu of gorgeous festive fare using the list below.
As the festive season gets closer I’ll also be sharing seasonal articles, recipes, activities and more over on the family friends food Facebook page so don’t forget to join us over there!
Wishing you a happy, healthy, prosperous and delicious new year! Shana Tova!
